How It Works

Ten of a kind join up and move one place left

Every block here is drawn to size. A ten is exactly as tall as 10 ones. A hundred is exactly as wide as 10 tens. A thousand is exactly as deep as 10 hundreds. The same pattern keeps going all the way up to hundred thousands.

Tips for helping tonight

Begin with How It Works. Press Fill up to the next ten a few times and ask her what happened to the 10 ones.
Then go to Block Builder. Have her add blocks and read the number out loud each time.
Push the ones past 9 and press Trade. "Ten ones make one ten" is the big idea behind all of place value.
In Code Cracker, watch the zeros. Leaving out a zero (writing 527 for 5,207) is the most common slip.
In Round It, find the dashed digit, then look at its neighbour on the right. That one digit decides up or down.
If she gets one wrong, read the explanation together and point at the coloured chart.
Keep it to 10 or 15 minutes and stop on a win.
